12. The Other Way Around-Inversion
A. Instead of an action dictated by the specifications of the problem, implement an opposite action.
Example:
• Chinese handcuffs.
• To loosen stuck parts, cool the inner part instead of heating the outer part.
• Freeze gum on clothing in order to scrape it off.
• To fix hail dents, heat and then apply dry ice.
B. Make a moving part of the object or the outside environment immovable and the non-moving part movable.
Example:
• Meat slicer.
• Cannon auto focus lens. The mechanical device is built into the lens, not the camera.
• Rotate an airplane to check for foreign matter.
• Moving sidewalk
C. Turn the object upside-down.
Example:
• Abrasively clean parts by vibrating the parts instead of the abrasive.
• Empty grain from containers by inverting them.
