28. Replacement of a Mechanical System
A. Replace a mechanical system by an optical, acoustical or olfactory (odor) system.
Example:
• Replace a physical fence to confine a dog or cat with an acoustic “fence " (signal audible to the animal).
• Use a bad smelling compound in natural gas to alert users to leakage, instead of a mechanical or electrical sensor.
B. Use an electrical, magnetic or electromagnetic field for interaction with the object.
Example:
• Use electric, magnetic and electromagnetic fields to interact with the object.
• To mix two powders, electro statically charge one positive and the other negative. Either use fields to direct them, or mix them mechanically and let their acquired fields cause the grains of powder to pair up.
C. Replace fields.
1. Stationary fields with moving fields.
2. Fixed fields with those that change in time.
3. Random fields with structured fields.
D. Use a field in conjunction with ferromagnetic particles.
Example:
• To increase the bond between metal coating and a thermoplastic material, the process is carried out inside an electromagnetic field that applies force to the metal.
• Heat a substance containing ferromagnetic material by using varying magnetic fields. When the temperature exceeds the Curie point, the material becomes paramagnetic, and no longer absorbs heat.
